We’re National Champions Again!
Chalford’s excellent young players are national youth champions again – four years after first winning the title.
Adjudicators Katrina Marzella and Paul Duffy were so impressed with their performance in the national youth championships for 2016 they had no hesitation in putting them in top place.
The icing on the cake was best instrumentalist award for principal euphonium player Stephen Parker, whose solo “As Long as He Needs Me” wowed the judges and audience in the Royal Northern College of Music concert hall, Manchester.
Chalford Youth were the 10th band out of 12 to go on stage to perform their well-chosen 15-minute programme and gave conductor Steve Tubb all he asked for.
Congratulations poured in after the result including one from The Gus Virtuoso Band whose prowess rubbed off on the Chalford youngsters when they played together at Stroud Subscriptions Rooms recently.

Katrina Marzell’s Remarks
A bold impressive opening, followed by good style contrast at (B). Lots of detail evident and balance is good. Ensemble is tight and tempo is maintained (not easy in this piece!), even if it could be slightly brighter? A small point however: this is a very good band playing indeed. Percussion is rather strong (however this is an issue in the hall all day). just be careful. A really good performance.
Gentle sounds, which are sustained through the band – not easy to do. Excellent attempt at quieter dynamics and lovely shaping indeed. Intonation was well handled too.
As long as he needs me.
Lovely flugel to open and rich euph sound follows, with only the smallest blip to start – you recover really well and phrase very thoughtfully indeed. Impressive technique follows and builds to a fine and exciting close. Bravo indeed!
This has a lovely lilt to it and cornet part is stylishly played. Lovely band playing indeed; all parts are heard and the sound is generally rich and warm. Nice shapes at (F). Excellent control at (G). Brave playing by all in the exposed sections too.
Lots of energy on show and fun had by all sections (bravo tubas!). Lovely euph too. Thoughtful presentation too. A fun close.
Thank you for a wonderful performance today. I am very impressed with your lyrical playing and control in your softer dynamics – so mature and musical. A real highlight. Keep working hard at all the basics of sound, balance, ensemble, etc and you’ll go far. Thank you, well done and good luck!!
Paul Duffy’S Remarks
Bold and solid start. I like it. Nicely balanced. Dynamics are heard well. (DJ is also played well. Good stuff. Tempo is kept driving. Good drummer. All goes along nicely.
Everyone is playing their role in this one. Nice rall to close.
just a tad unsteady to start but settles quickly and a warm band sound is heard. I like the controlled tempo. Everybody seems to be working hard to play the basics right. It comes across brilliantly. Well done.
As Long as He Needs Me
Lovely start and flugel horn solo sets the scene well. Euph sound super. A little nervy to start but the class starts to show, especially when he blows it. Band accompanies well mostly. Can always hear the soloist. Perhaps 10 per cent less could be used for the faster music from the accompaniment.
Again, lovely sounds, perhaps more could be done to feel the lilting nature. Soloist sounds fab. I like what I’m hearing. (D) Cantabile is controlled and classy. [G] Special moments. Thank you. Well done all, especially soprano! Just tiny errors towards the end but a great show.
Great choice to finish. All of the soli interjections are played great. Style is also well maintained thanks to good tuba and percussion. Great suff.
A really impressive performance. Controlled and had everything of a top performance and band. Well done. Bravo. Thank you.
